Refresher Course / Operator Re-certification

According to the Ontario government regulations, trained forklift operators are required to complete re-certification every 2-3 years to maintain their qualification with mid-term evaluation. Re-training is also required in the event of the following:

  1. Accident / near accident
  2. An observation is made where the fork lift is used in an unsafe way
  3. An assessment indicates that extra training is required
  4. Changes in the workplace presenting new hazards
  5. Operators are upgraded to newer or different models / types
  6. After passing of three years since the initial certification

The Refresher Course consists of 5 hours of in-class theory followed by a practical skills assessment in a warehouse setting.

Topics emphasized in this course include:

  1. Safety and health hazards.
  2. Legal rights and responsibilities of forklift operators.
  3. Troubleshooting for common problems .

As well, we will revisit the basics:

  1. Fundamentals of powered lift trucks: components, factors affecting stability, load centers, rules and regulations.
  2. General operating procedures: circle check, start-up, shutdown, forward/reverse on level ground, parking; safe operating around other people.
  3. Load handling: selection of loads, load pickup and placement, load stability and integrity, loading and off-loading of trailers.
  4. Operational maintenance: re-fuelling and battery recharging.
  5. Workplace safety: identifying potential hazards, environmental conditions affecting lift truck performance.
  6. Separate training on handling propane can be included in this course upon request

After completing the training course, each operator's theoretical knowledge and skills will be assessed using a multiple-choice questionnaire test and practical evaluation of their ability to operate a forklift truck in a safe and efficient manner. Upon successful completion of the evaluation, each operator will receive a wallet size photo ID license and Certificate of Achievement.
